We hunt & gather grapes from great vineyard sites

Handcrafted by Macedon Ranges based winemaker Brian Martin, the Hunter-Gatherer range of wines encompass ideals of faithful expression of site, the use of old-world wine-making practices and the application of new-world knowledge.

Brian has spent the past 13 years making wine in the Macedon Ranges, including 10 years at Kilchurn winery, specialising in making traditional method sparkling wines for wineries throughout Australia.

The Hunter-Gatherer range includes Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Sparkling Shiraz. New wines coming soon include Prosecco, Sangiovese Rose and a Sangiovese Red.

Grapes are sourced predominantly from vineyards in the Macedon and Heathcote wine regions. Brian & his wife Roslyn purchased their own Macedon Ranges vineyard in Pipers Creek in late 2015. The site has a 5-hectare planting of 15 -year-old Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Merlot. They will continue to hunt for grapes from other exceptional vineyard sites to explore regional and site differences. 

The HG Pipers Creek vineyard cellar door is open weekends and a venue space adjoining the cellar door is available for weddings, events and functions.

2010 Pinot Chardonnay Sparkling                                        $35 per bottle,  $210 per 6 pack

A 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes gathered from cool climate vineyards in Pipers Creek in the Macedon Ranges and Clunes near Ballarat. Made using traditional methods, this wine spent more than 5 years on yeast lees prior to disgorgement in Feb 2016 with a low sugar dosage of 1.0 g/L. A complex wine with toasty brioche characters overlayed with citrus and floral notes and a crisp dry finish


 
 

2013 Chardonnay, Macedon                               $30 per bottle, $360 per 12 pack

The grapes for this Chardonnay were gathered from 2 small cool climate vineyard sites near Romsey. Fermented in French oak barrels using wild yeast, this wine shows elegance, purity and great length.


 
 

2015 Riesling, Macedon                                       $25 per bottle, $300 per 12 pack

The grapes for this Riesling were gathered from the HG vineyard in Pipers Creek. The north facing vineyard is at 590m elevation with deep red volcanic soils. The wine displays citrus and floral characters and has great intensity with its natural acidity giving it lovely line and length.


 
 

2015 Riesling, Heathcote                                                  $25 per bottle,  $300 per 12 pack

The grapes for this Riesling were gathered from a vineyard in Tooborac at the South Eastern corner of the Heathcote region. This wine comes from a cool site with granite soils and shows classic lemon lime characters with floral notes and a crisp dry finish.

2013 Pinot Noir, Macedon                                         $30 per bottle, $360 per 12 pack

Hand-picked fruit from Romsey, fermented with wild yeast, de-stemmed with 20% whole bunches, hand-plunged in open vats. Aged in French oak barriques for 15 months. 

Beautifully fragrant, raspberry and currants, supple tannins. Be seduced & entranced by its beautiful perfume. Light in body but complex on the palate with layers of raspberry, cranberry, earth and spice.


 
 

2012 Shiraz, Heathcote                                                $30 per bottle, $360 per 12 pack

The grapes for this Shiraz were gathered from a vineyard in Colbinabbin from vines growing in ancient Cambrian soils. The grapes were fermented using wild yeast and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. A medium bodied wine that shows complexity, elegance and balance. An excellent food wine.


 
 

2010 Shiraz, Heathcote                                            $25 per bottle,  $300 per 12 pack

The grapes for this Shiraz were gathered from a vineyard in Colbinabbin from vines growing in ancient Cambrian soils. The grapes were fermented and hand plunged in small vats and aged for 20 months in French oak barrels.


 
 

2013 Sparkling Shiraz, Heathcote                                 $35 per bottle,  $210 per 6 pack

The grapes for this sparkling Shiraz were gathered from a vineyard in Tooborac at the South Eastern corner of the Heathcote region. Made using traditional methods, it spent 2 years on yeast lees prior to disgorgement. A festive wine, great with food or on its own. 


 
 

Cellar Reserve Shiraz 2005, Heathcote                    $70 per bottle, $420 per 6 pack

An aged cellar release of an outstanding vintage of Heathcote Shiraz. The grapes were gathered from a vineyard in Tooleen from vines growing in ancient Cambrian soils. The grapes were hand-picked and hand-plunged in small vats, then aged in 100% new french oak barrels for 15 months.
